Schalke
chairman Clemens Tonnies has labelled reports claiming defender Joel
Matip has already agreed terms with Liverpool "a hoax."
Matip, 24,
has so far been reluctant to put pen to a paper on a new contract at
Schalke, the club he has played for since he was nine, with his current
deal due to expire in the summer.
Over the past few weeks, several outlets reported that Liverpool are keen to bring the centre-back to Premier League.
On Wednesday, Sport Bild reported that the deal to sign Matip on a free is all but done.
Der Westen also claimed that the defender had a "positive meeting" with an English club, said to be Liverpool.
"That's a hoax," Tonnies told Sport 1.
Later
on Thursday, sporting director Horst Heldt said via the club's official
Twitter account that no deal had been struck over a January move to
Anfield for Matip.
The
Royal Blues announced in December they have agreed another meeting in
late January with Matip's agent, Alexander Schutt, following "good
talks" with the player's representative.
"Then it'll make sense to have a decision. That's important for everyone -- for Joel and FC Schalke 04," Heldt said at that time.
